On Friday, May 15th, 2009, 4-H Homeschoolers in Thomaston, Georgia worked with friends to Adopt-a-Row in the community garden.  Because green is the favorite color of 4-H, green beans were planted and mulched in row #7 for the local UGA 4-H members and the Bluebird Market.

The old R. C. Cola Building Parking lot had more than 4 inches of gravel excavated. Then trucks were brought in of garden soil, 400 lbs of organic manure and compost, and mulch. Raised beds were built and filled with Enviro Recyclers soil.  IMG_3779IMG_3910IMG_3814IMG_3877IMG_3797IMG_3724

LadybugThe UGA Experiment Station’s advice is by planting brightly colored flowers, eco-friendly insects like ladybugs and praying mantis are drawn to the garden to better control pestful insects.

use this flyer for opening day To further strengthen local sustainability, the garden will open a tailgate farmer’s market in the neighborhood for local growers and artisans to market organically.  The market will open on Saturdays from 8:00 – noon and is located at the old R.C. Cola Building parking lot on 215 Barnesville Street, Thomaston, GA.   The aim of the market is to redirect local buyers by bringing them together with local growers and artisans.  Click here to read more about the market on Local Harvest.

Bluebird Victory Garden 4-H Club to Meet Tweeting Bluebird

As a special eco-friendly tweet coming soon, a funny big bluebird will make a debut arts education appearance  tweeting through the garden.   Talented local Theatre Director and Costume Designer, Anita Fillingim, will bring our fascinating “Tweety” the Bluebird to life!

Anita has directed arts education locally for Alice in Wonderland, Nunsense, and will direct the Thomaston Upson Arts Council’s children’s theatre upcoming performance of Annie, Jr.  Anita has designed costumes for Robin Hood, Little Mermaid, Wizard of Oz and was music director on the local performance of High School Musical.  We are honored to have her arts education expertise for the Bluebird Victory Garden mascot, “Tweety”.

Join us as we plant a pair of fruit trees in the community victory garden to celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 24 from 3-5.  On this day designed for planting trees, we will have a gathering in the garden.

Trees given to garden:

Crepe Myrtle, Poplar Tulip, Red Maple, Holly, Wild Cherry, Wild Magnolia.
